03 / What makes a UHQR
What is inside every box
The steps according to Analogue Productions, from the tape to the certificate.
- I
From the tape
Mastered from the original master tapes or the best available tape copy. Wherever Analogue Productions names the source, it is listed with the edition.
- II
Clarity Vinyl
Vinyl without carbon black. According to the manufacturer this eliminates noise from carbon black particles, which is why the records are translucent.
- III
200 grams, flat profile
No pitch from the lead-in to the run-out groove, so the stylus plays perpendicular to the groove.
- IV
Pressed at QRP
Quality Record Pressings in Salina, Kansas, presses every UHQR.
- V
Inspected by hand
Every record is hand inspected after pressing. Only flawless copies go to market.
- VI
Box with certificate
The box includes a booklet on the manufacturing process and a hand-signed certificate of inspection.

04 / Against the original
Michael 45 plays UHQR against first pressings
For his videos, Michael 45 puts the UHQR next to first and promo pressings. These are his verdicts, each with a link to the moment in the video.
“I’d give the original white-label promo copy an eight – and the UHQR a ten.”
“It was frightening how much better the 45 RPM UHQR of Exodus is – it simply smoked it.”
“As always with a UHQR, this is in my opinion the definitive edition of Tres Hombres – at least of the ones I could compare.”
“Sound-wise, the UHQR is a killer – a real killer.”
“With the Doors’ L.A. Woman UHQR, you get the best 33⅓ there is.”
“I’m 100 percent sure: what we have here is the ultimate version.”
“With this UHQR, we can now enjoy the sound of a mint original.”
“On my system, and to my taste, this is without a doubt the best-sounding version.”
“You prove that you can do it better than the original … With this UHQR, Analogue Productions really did it again.”

From Michael’s videos
What Michael 45 says about the UHQR series
“The idea of the UHQR series, in my opinion, is that these releases should be the ultimate version.”
“Whenever you get a UHQR, you can be pretty sure you’re getting the ultimate version of that record.”
“It’s worth going through that whole process – through all those tiny details that, in my opinion, it takes to beat those iconic originals.”
“You’ll hear the difference no matter what equipment you have – and of course, the better your system, the more you hear.”
“The UHQR series means top-class titles in their ultimate version.”
The series
The story of UHQR
From Japan to Kansas
The first UHQR was made at JVC’s pressing plant in Japan in the early 1980s. Analogue Productions took up the idea: today Quality Record Pressings in Salina, Kansas, presses every UHQR on 200-gram Clarity Vinyl, inspects it by hand and packs it in a box with a booklet and a hand-signed certificate.
From the first Hendrix to The Who
The series started with two Jimi Hendrix releases. Today the catalogue holds his Axis: Bold As Love in stereo and in mono and Are You Experienced? Alongside them are Miles Davis, John Coltrane, all seven Steely Dan albums from Can’t Buy a Thrill to Gaucho, Bill Evans, The White Stripes, The Doors, Sonny Rollins, Art Pepper, ZZ Top and Vince Guaraldi.
Bob Marley and The Wailers received a line of their own: Rastaman Vibration and Exodus at 45 RPM, mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. Catch a Fire, Burnin’ and Natty Dread followed at both speeds, mastered by Frank Arkwright and Ryan K. Smith at Abbey Road Studios. Most recently, Tommy and Who’s Next by The Who joined the series.
Collecting with a system
Edition sizes range from 2,500 to 30,000 copies. Because the series grew larger than planned, the box was redesigned. The black spine with gold lettering stayed, so the collection still belongs together on the shelf. Michael 45 has presented many editions in his videos and compared them against first and promo pressings.
33⅓ or 45 RPM
24 editions play at 45 RPM on two LPs, 7 at 33⅓ RPM. Catch a Fire, Burnin’ and Natty Dread are available at both speeds. The customer question “45 or 33⅓ RPM” explains what speaks for each speed.
