Jazz · recorded 1959
Kind of Blue
Miles Davis
Recorded on 2 March and 22 April 1959 in New York with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. During the first session the tape machine ran too slowly – the Analogue Productions double LP includes the three affected pieces at corrected speed and in the speed version originally released.
“It comes with sheer, unbelievable ease … When Miles comes in, he’s there within a fraction of a second. There’s this musicality, this band, the room, the separation, the soundstage – it’s all so natural.”
“Let’s start with a masterpiece … Kind of Blue, Miles Davis. We have a very, very special edition here.”

Time Out
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Released in 1959, it grew from Dave Brubeck’s fascination with rhythms beyond conventional American popular song – and it is far warmer and more playful than the word “experiment” might suggest.
“Dave Brubeck’s Time Out at 45 rpm – a legend, a legendary album. If there were a top five, it would probably be in it. One of the best-sounding albums you can buy. Fantastic.”

“The voice on the Analogue Production has this analog vinyl touch – and Muddy Waters is very dynamic when he sings … This one stays my personal number one for this 1964 Muddy Waters release.”

04 / Guide
Where do you start?
21 great albums from jazz, blues, rock & pop, reggae and classical: 15 of them come in several editions here, six in one special edition. Above, you pick an album and see its editions side by side. This is the question before that: where do you start? It depends on what you like to hear.
You love jazz

Then “Kind of Blue” is the natural choice: recorded on 2 March and 22 April 1959 in New York with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. From the same year comes “Time Out”, born of Dave Brubeck’s fascination with rhythms beyond conventional American popular song. “Way Out West” shows Sonny Rollins in 1957 in a trio with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and with “The Girl from Ipanema”, “Getz/Gilberto” helped bossa nova reach an international audience.
You love rock and pop
“Pet Sounds” joins the Beach Boys’ voices in 1966 with keyboards, strings, brass and tuned percussion – and even bicycles and everyday sounds. “Axis: Bold As Love” is the second Jimi Hendrix Experience album: here the studio becomes part of the band. “The Dark Side of the Moon” is built as one continuous journey, and on “Aja” Donald Fagen and Walter Becker work with changing rhythm sections in 1977.
You’re looking for blues, reggae or classical

“Folk Singer” shows Muddy Waters in Chicago in September 1963 on voice and guitar, with Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon on bass and Clifton James on drums. “Exodus” was released in 1977, after Bob Marley had left for England following the assassination attempt in Kingston. And “Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra” takes you to Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, recorded on 8 March 1954.
You want to compare editions
You have the most choice with “A Love Supreme” and “Folk Singer”: four editions each, from vinyl at 33⅓ rpm to reel-to-reel tape. With “Pet Sounds” you choose between stereo and mono, with “Axis: Bold As Love” between the UHQR in stereo and the one in mono. Above, under “Your edition”, you see all the editions of an album side by side.
