04 / Guide
Where do you start?
The two Jimi Hendrix Experience albums gathered here were released in 1967, only a few months apart: “Are You Experienced” and “Axis: Bold As Love”. We carry them in four editions – as UHQR, “Axis” separately in stereo and in mono, and “Are You Experienced” also as a hybrid SACD with both mixes. Plus an album on which Hendrix plays as a guest: “Stephen Stills” from 1970. Where you start depends on what you want to hear.
You want to hear the Experience from the start

Then begin with “Are You Experienced”. Both our editions follow the eleven-track American version: “Purple Haze” opens, “Hey Joe” and “The Wind Cries Mary” are included, and the title track closes. The UHQR brings the stereo version, the hybrid SACD stereo and mono.
You want to hear the studio become an instrument

Then “Axis: Bold As Love” is your album. Here the studio becomes part of the band: “EXP” opens as an invented radio scene, Hendrix plays the glockenspiel himself on “Little Wing”, and Eddie Kramer uses phasing on “Bold As Love”.
Mono or stereo – or both?
Two separate mixes of “Axis” were made in 1967; you’ll find them side by side above under “Mono or stereo?”. Michael 45 knows no other edition where mono and stereo differ this much. If you want to get to know both sides of this album, take both: stereo in 4,500 copies, mono in 2,500.
You want to hear Hendrix with others
On Stephen Stills’ first solo album, “Stephen Stills” from 1970, Hendrix plays on “Old Times Good Times”; it appeared after his death and is dedicated to him. And Stevie Ray Vaughan plays “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” on “Couldn’t Stand the Weather” as an open tribute to Hendrix – and yet entirely in his own language.
Which edition suits you?
“Axis: Bold As Love” comes as a UHQR at 45 rpm on two records, in a box with a 16-page booklet and a hand-signed inspection certificate; “Are You Experienced” as a UHQR at 33⅓ rpm on one record – both on 200-gram Clarity Vinyl and limited. The hybrid SACD of “Are You Experienced” has two layers: the CD layer plays stereo on any CD player, the SACD layer stereo and mono on an SACD player. It comes with a 36-page booklet.
Frequently asked
Quick answers
How do mono and stereo differ on “Axis: Bold As Love”?
Jimi Hendrix, Chas Chandler and Eddie Kramer made both mixes in 1967, the mono version separately. In mono, voices and instruments share one channel – listen for the entrances, the relative levels and the interplay of vocals and accompaniment. In stereo, placement in space is part of the design.
Where do I start?
With “Are You Experienced” if you want to hear the Experience from the very beginning – or with “Axis: Bold As Love” if you are curious how the studio becomes part of the band. With “Axis” you can then choose between mono and stereo.
Which version of “Are You Experienced” is this?
The American one of 23 August 1967, with eleven tracks: there “Purple Haze”, “Hey Joe” and “The Wind Cries Mary” replace “Red House”, “Remember” and “Can You See Me” from the British edition of 12 May. Both our editions follow it – the UHQR in stereo, the SACD with stereo and mono.
Does the SACD play on my CD player?
Yes – the CD layer, in stereo. For the SACD layer with stereo and mono you need an SACD player.
How many copies of the UHQR editions exist?
The stereo UHQR of “Axis: Bold As Love” is limited to 4,500 copies, the mono UHQR to 2,500. For “Are You Experienced”, 20,000 copies were announced.
Does Hendrix play on other albums here?
Yes, as a guest on “Stephen Stills” (1970): on “Old Times Good Times”. The album appeared after Hendrix’s death and is dedicated to him.
