What the cleaning does

On request we clean your record in our Klaudio ultrasonic machine before it ships and check it by eye. In my experience this pays off with new records too: pressing can leave residues, and a clean groove is kinder to your cartridge.

This means opening the shrink wrap – your record arrives cleaned in your parcel. From €5 per record, depending on the album.

I am aware and agree, that the Record will be put out of the original shrink wrap (this will be included to the delivery).

The album begins beyond the familiar hit

Some songs carry an entire atmosphere in their title. “Summer Breeze” is one of them. Yet the Seals & Crofts album is more than an extended version of a familiar radio moment. Its shared vocals, acoustic instruments and changing instrumental colours make music that is approachable without being confined to a single mood.

Released in 1972, this was already Jim Seals and Dash Crofts’ fourth album. The breakthrough did not arrive from nowhere. They had developed a distinctive way of bringing two voices and different string instruments together. The title song makes entry easy; the greater reward comes from staying with the record and following its less familiar routes.

The producer is playing too

Louie Shelton produced Summer Breeze and also contributed guitar. That matters. He was not simply directing proceedings from the other side of the control-room glass, but participating in the musical work. His relationship with the duo continued through further successful recordings, making him part of their story rather than a name to pass over in the credits.

The album’s instrumentation extends beyond the expected folk-rock framework. Steel guitar, banjo, tabla and tambura appear among its credits. The point is not to collect unusual instrument names. What matters is how a different attack or a new set of overtones can change the familiar relationship between voice and guitar. Those small shifts in colour keep the record from becoming an undifferentiated summer backdrop.

Give “Hummingbird” its beginning

The album opens with “Hummingbird”, not its title hit. That sequencing reminds us that an LP has a story of its own. The longer album version includes a prologue omitted from the single. If the radio version is your reference, the opening therefore offers a different perspective: the music has time to establish itself before the more familiar song unfolds.

The hummingbird also connects with the musicians’ spiritual world. Both belonged to the Bahá’í faith. Listeners need not share those beliefs to recognise that the imagery and the search for connection can mean more than decorative references to nature. The record’s friendly surface is not the limit of its meaning.

More than one life for a song

The Isley Brothers and, much later, Type O Negative made strikingly different versions of “Summer Breeze”. That breadth reveals how much a strong composition can accommodate. The song remains recognisable even when the voice, instrumental weight and arrangement change fundamentally. Returning to Seals & Crofts afterwards brings the choices in their original balance into sharper focus.

Try following the voices separately from the small instrumental replies. The album does not depend on packing in accompaniment; it depends on relationships between parts. Its warmth remains, but the craft behind that warmth becomes easier to notice. A summer classic we think we know thoroughly can become a record with fresh details to discover, rather than simply a familiar atmosphere to revisit.
