What the cleaning does

On request we clean your record in our Klaudio ultrasonic machine before it ships and check it by eye. In my experience this pays off with new records too: pressing can leave residues, and a clean groove is kinder to your cartridge.

This means opening the shrink wrap – your record arrives cleaned in your parcel. From €5 per record, depending on the album.

I am aware and agree, that the Record will be put out of the original shrink wrap (this will be included to the delivery).

Four perspectives on Duke Ellington

A Celebration of Duke appeared on Pablo in 1980, bringing together recordings from several sessions in 1979 and 1980. Its title identifies a common point of reference, rather than one shared lineup. Sarah Vaughan, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims and the quartet Quadrant interpret music from Duke Ellington’s world, with their separate contributions assembled into an album. That form is part of the program’s appeal: related repertoire appears through vocals, a horn-led group and an instrumental quartet featuring vibraphone and guitar. The changing personnel belong to the record’s conception.

The authorship also calls for a broader view than the album title alone suggests. “Take The ‘A’ Train” was written by Billy Strayhorn, while “Caravan” is associated with Juan Tizol. Ellington’s musical world grew through collaboration with composers and players such as these. A tribute can make those relationships visible rather than attributing every piece solely to him. Clark Terry also brings direct experience from Ellington’s orchestra, having been a member during the 1950s. His participation provides a personal connection between the earlier ensemble and this later celebration.

The groups behind the ten tracks

Quadrant consists of Milt Jackson on vibraphone, Joe Pass on guitar, Ray Brown on bass and Mickey Roker on drums. They play “Caravan,” “Take The ‘A’ Train” and “Main Stem.” Terry is accompanied on his three selections by Jack Wilson, Joe Pass, Ray Brown and Frank Severino. Even within the instrumental tracks, two different settings are already present: vibraphone and guitar lead one group, while Terry’s trumpet works with another rhythm section. Shared names connect the sessions without making them the same lineup.

Zoot Sims plays soprano saxophone here, a distinction worth making because many listeners first associate him with tenor. His group includes Jimmy Rowles, Michael Moore and John Clay. Vaughan’s “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues” and “Everything But You” come from a separate recording context, with Mike Wofford and Joe Pass named in the principal album credits. Sources disagree about further accompanists. The personnel list therefore preserves the documented assignments and identifies the uncertainty rather than combining every session’s credits into a supposedly complete band.

Familiar themes with changing partners

The ten selections can be heard as a succession of encounters with the repertoire. With Quadrant, attention can shift to the relationship between vibraphone and guitar: how are themes distributed, and where does a chordal reply complement a melodic line? Terry’s selections offer another approach to the same tradition. Sims’s soprano changes the instrumental reference from the tenor recordings through which many listeners know him. These differences need not be ranked. They are concrete aspects of what the compilation places side by side.

Vaughan’s voice introduces a further dimension because words and their phrasing move to the foreground. A theme recognized instrumentally through contour and harmony gains a verbal perspective in song. The album moves among these settings rather than sustaining one formation for all ten tracks. Pass connects several groups as a participating guitarist: he appears on eight tracks, excluding the two Sims selections. Following the personnel changes through the tracklist allows the compilation to function as a short tour of different working methods within Pablo’s recording world.

The Analogue Productions reissue

This edition is a single 180-gram stereo LP playing at 33⅓ RPM, released by Analogue Productions. Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab handled mastering. The publisher identifies the original analog tape as the source. Quality Record Pressings manufactures the record, and Stoughton supplies the tip-on jacket. The product number is AAPJ 162. No particular early numbered copy is promised as part of this description. The format and program identify this reissue of the original Pablo compilation.

All ten selections from the original album are included. The reissue therefore preserves a record whose continuity comes from repertoire and editorial selection. It does not document a joint session involving every artist named on the cover. Keeping the groups distinct makes individual contributions easier to locate and their musical connections easier to follow. Ellington and his composing circle remain the common starting point; Vaughan, Terry, Sims and Quadrant each bring their own personnel and way of working. The original 1980 release holds those perspectives together in a fixed sequence, allowing their relationships to emerge across the two sides of the record.
