Festival as a hybrid multichannel SACD from Analogue Productions’ RCA Living Stereo series: Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in six orchestral showpieces, remastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analogue three-track tapes. All six pieces play in one sequence – from Kabalevsky’s Colas Breugnon overture to Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila.
Six showpieces, one sharp profile
Festival presents Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in six compact orchestral showpieces by Kabalevsky, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Mussorgsky and Glinka. Recorded in 1959, the programme is built for contrast: brilliant overtures, ceremonial marches, miniature elegance and dark fantasy follow one another without needing the scale of a symphony. Reiner’s precision gives each piece a sharply defined profile, and the Chicago musicians supply all the colour and attack this music asks for.
Kabalevsky’s Colas Breugnon overture starts at a sprint, its quick exchanges and bright brass setting a festive mood. Tchaikovsky’s Marche slave grows from a sombre opening into a broad procession, while his Marche miniature swaps weight for delicacy. Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain brings the darkest images with rushing strings and brass calls, and Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila overture closes the programme with dazzling speed and pinpoint ensemble.
The hybrid multichannel SACD from Analogue Productions
CAPC 2423 SA is a hybrid multichannel SACD from Analogue Productions’ RCA Living Stereo series. According to the publisher, Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound remastered it from the original analogue three-track tapes. For the three-channel programme you need a multichannel-capable SACD player and a matching setup; the CD layer plays on any conventional CD player. The disc contains all six pieces – a wonderful introduction to the Chicago Symphony under Reiner, from disciplined strings to incisive brass and woodwinds.
