What the cleaning does

On request we clean your record in our Klaudio ultrasonic machine before it ships and check it by eye. In my experience this pays off with new records too: pressing can leave residues, and a clean groove is kinder to your cartridge.

This means opening the shrink wrap – your record arrives cleaned in your parcel. From €5 per record, depending on the album.

I am aware and agree, that the Record will be put out of the original shrink wrap (this will be included to the delivery).

Gatefold · 2 LPs

There are two ways to protect this gatefold jacket:

For the two records: two inner sleeves. Outer sleeves protect the jacket; each inner sleeve protects one record. You can keep using suitable inner sleeves you already have.

The pianist writes, the saxophonist leads

Gene Ammons gives Blue Gene its name and leads the ensemble, but pianist Mal Waldron wrote all four compositions. That division of responsibilities provides a useful starting point. A shared set of themes meets seven musicians with different instruments and functions. The extended performances leave them time to develop individual ideas within that framework.

The session took place at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio on May 2, 1958. Idrees Sulieman plays trumpet and Pepper Adams baritone saxophone alongside Ammons's tenor. Waldron, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor form the rhythm section, with Ray Barretto adding congas. The resulting group offers a wider range of combinations than a conventional quartet.

Three horns and an extra rhythmic voice

Trumpet, tenor and baritone occupy different registers. Follow how the perspective changes as another instrument moves to the front. Adams's baritone adds a lower horn voice alongside Watkins's bass, while Sulieman's trumpet brings a contrasting presence. Ammons remains the leader, but these individual contributions are central to the record's design.

Barretto's congas also expand the rhythmic resources. Listen for their relationship to Taylor's drum kit: the two percussion parts can emphasise different points within the same movement. A longer performance allows time to notice what happens beneath a solo. The accompanying musicians sustain a common structure while the horns find their own routes through it.

One performance on each side

The title track runs for almost fourteen minutes. “Scamperin'”, “Blue Greens 'N Beans” and “Hip Tip” each last roughly nine. The publisher identifies three of the four compositions as blues-based. That shared formal foundation offers a point of orientation while themes and improvisations take different courses. The programme gains variety through the treatment of its material.

On this 45 RPM edition, each composition occupies a complete side. The division suits the scale of the performances: one conversation finishes before a turn of the record begins another. You can approach the album in four separate stretches or follow it from beginning to end. Waldron's writing supplies the connection, while the seven players bring different possibilities into focus each time. Knowing that all four pieces come from the pianist also encourages attention to the musical shapes behind the solos.
