Two Against Nature as a hybrid stereo SACD from Analogue Productions’ Steely Dan series: Bernie Grundman newly remastered the Grammy-winning comeback album direct to DSD from the original analogue tape. All nine songs play in one sequence – from “Gaslighting Abbie” to “West of Hollywood”.
The comeback with every edge intact
Two Against Nature brought Steely Dan back to the studio album after a long interval, with Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s fascination for compromised narrators, precise grooves and harmonic misdirection fully intact. “Gaslighting Abbie” enters on a taut rhythmic pattern while its narrator reveals more than he intends, and “What a Shame About Me” places failure and self-knowledge inside music whose elegance makes the story cut deeper.
The album does not try to recreate the surface of the earlier records: drums, keyboards, bass and horns are organised with contemporary exactness, while the writing remains unmistakable. “Janie Runaway” pairs a bright arrangement with an increasingly unsettling character study, “Jack of Speed” lets small harmonic turns do the dramatic work, and the title track matches narrative unease with shifting detail. Background vocals and horn figures often carry the clues the narrators miss – proof that this return had a reason far beyond nostalgia.
