Fred Kaplan, in Stereophile (February 2017), wrote that despite never having heard an original pressing, this 200-gram QRP reissue – mastered at 33⅓ by Kevin Gray – stands equal to Rudy Van Gelder’s Blue Note LPs from the same era, with brash, airy trumpet, woody plucked bass, and crisp cymbal work. He noted that “Blue Friday” echoes the trumpet passages on “Stolen Moments” from Oliver Nelson’s The Blues and the Abstract Truth – a resemblance he suggested was no coincidence.
Quiet Kenny stands as another reminder of what a giant Kenny Dorham was on trumpet. Whether shaping ballads like “My Ideal,” “Alone Together,” “I Had the Craziest Dream,” and “Old Folks,” or working through blues structures on his own compositions, the former Charlie Parker sideman and ex-Jazz Messenger shows off his subtle swing, distinctive tone, and refined harmonic sense – a legacy shaped by his ties to Bird, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Harry James, and Louis Armstrong. With Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, and Arthur Taylor.
