What the cleaning does

On request we clean your record in our Klaudio ultrasonic machine before it ships and check it by eye. In my experience this pays off with new records too: pressing can leave residues, and a clean groove is kinder to your cartridge.

This means opening the shrink wrap – your record arrives cleaned in your parcel. From €5 per record, depending on the album.

I am aware and agree, that the Record will be put out of the original shrink wrap (this will be included to the delivery).

One voice, many conversations

“Chain of Fools” opens Lady Soul with a musical relationship that needs little explanation: one voice exchanges phrases with the responses around it. Aretha Franklin can stretch a syllable, sharpen a turn or pull back an entire line without losing that connection. On this 1968 album, much of the effect lies in these relationships — between lead and backing voices, piano and rhythm section, familiar writing and a fresh interpretation.

The record belongs to the period following her Atlantic breakthrough with I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You. Jerry Wexler produces, Tom Dowd is part of the recording team, and Franklin contributes both vocals and piano. Listening only for the celebrated lead voice can obscure how actively the surrounding musicians participate. Vocal responses, instrumental comments and the timing of an entrance create a framework against which her phrases can move.

Songs acquire a new perspective

The repertoire connects several distinct writers. “Money Won’t Change You” leads to James Brown and Nat Jones; “People Get Ready” to Curtis Mayfield. “Groovin’” comes from Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati. Placing these songs together makes physical rhythm, hope, intimacy and doubt aspects of the same musical personality.

“(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” carries the names Gerry Goffin, Carole King and Jerry Wexler. Alongside it are Franklin’s own collaborations with Ted White, “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Good to Me as I Am to You”. She helps create the repertoire as well as interpret it. What matters in listening is how little the distinction between her own material and another writer’s work interrupts the album. Her way of shaping and developing a thought becomes the connecting element.

The voices behind the voice

The credits bring together the Sweet Inspirations, Cissy Houston, Carolyn Franklin and Erma Franklin. Those backing parts deserve a listening pass of their own. They can reinforce a statement, fill an opening or sustain a note while Aretha reshapes her next phrase. Gospel emerges here as a practical way of conducting a musical conversation.

The closing song is “Ain’t No Way”, written by Carolyn Franklin. A contribution from within the family thus occupies a particularly important place in the album’s sequence. Earlier, “Good to Me as I Am to You” introduces another conversational partner: Eric Clapton plays guitar on that track. His appearance can be located precisely; it is not a general personnel credit for the whole record. Details like these give a return visit its purpose. Who is answering now, who is leaving space, and what changes the impact of the next vocal line?

This edition

Analogue Productions’ two-LP AAPA 033-45 is part of the Atlantic 75 Series and plays at 45 RPM. The publisher identifies the source as a 24-bit/192-kHz digital transfer of the original master tape. The edition uses 180-gram vinyl and a Stoughton Printing tip-on gatefold jacket. That source information applies to this specific edition and does not describe an entirely analogue production chain.
