What the cleaning does

On request we clean your record in our Klaudio ultrasonic machine before it ships and check it by eye. In my experience this pays off with new records too: pressing can leave residues, and a clean groove is kinder to your cartridge.

This means opening the shrink wrap – your record arrives cleaned in your parcel. From €5 per record, depending on the album.

I am aware and agree, that the Record will be put out of the original shrink wrap (this will be included to the delivery).

Two musicians are enough

A tenor saxophone and a guitar: Blues for 2 needs no larger ensemble. Joe Pass and Zoot Sims met for the recordings at RCA Studios in New York in 1982, and Pablo released the album in 1983. Norman Granz produced, with Mike Moran handling the engineering. The small ensemble exposes every musical decision without turning the encounter into an examination.

In his liner notes, Pass describes initial reservations about working in such a duo. He did not want to be confined to continuous chordal accompaniment. That is precisely the record’s interesting challenge: the guitar must be able to supply rhythm and harmony while retaining a voice of its own.

Accompaniment keeps moving

Listen to Pass shifting between chords, single-note lines and bass movement. Functions that a larger band would distribute among several musicians now lie in one pair of hands. Yet not every function needs to be filled at every moment. A pause can define the structure as clearly as a sounded note.

Sims brings the experience of a long life in swing and small-group playing to his tenor saxophone. The two need not simply take turns getting out of each other’s way for a solo to happen. What matters is the movement of foreground and background within a phrase. “Blues for 2” thus also describes a way of working: two players negotiating directly with one another.

Zoot Sims between “Dindi” and “Remember”

The programme connects the title blues with standards including “Pennies from Heaven”, “Poor Butterfly” and “I Hadn’t Anyone Till You”. “Dindi” introduces another melodic language. Eight selections provide ample opportunity to explore different kinds of closeness between saxophone and guitar without enlarging the ensemble.

“Black and Blue”, “Takeoff” and “Remember” complete the selection. One simple question offers a useful route through the record: when does the guitar follow the saxophone’s breathing, and when does it introduce a thought of its own? The absence of drums and double bass makes that exchange especially easy to follow. Its interest lies in the details of a conversation whose participants leave each other room.

One LP, mastered from the original analogue tapes

For AAPJ 188, Analogue Productions credits Matt Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, working from the original analogue master tapes. This is a single 180-gram LP at 33⅓ RPM, pressed at QRP, with a Stoughton tip-on single-pocket jacket. The eight tracks remain spread across two record sides; a gatefold is not part of this edition’s packaging.

Michael 45 keeps the goods in Germany and ships from Hilden, so German and EU customers can avoid organising a personal US import or waiting for customs processing.
