What the cleaning does

On request we clean your record in our Klaudio ultrasonic machine before it ships and check it by eye. In my experience this pays off with new records too: pressing can leave residues, and a clean groove is kinder to your cartridge.

This means opening the shrink wrap – your record arrives cleaned in your parcel. From €5 per record, depending on the album.

I am aware and agree, that the Record will be put out of the original shrink wrap (this will be included to the delivery).

A film commission becomes a jazz album

Sonny Rollins' Alfie begins with a distinction that helps explain the record. Rollins recorded musical sketches in London in 1965 for Lewis Gilbert's film starring Michael Caine. The musicians heard on this album, however, belong to a different session. On 26 January 1966 he entered Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs to develop the material into a separate recording. Its relationship to the film is genuine, while its musical form allows it to stand independently.

Oliver Nelson arranged the music and conducted the ensemble. He gave Rollins' ideas a broader instrumental setting and room to develop beyond short cues attached to individual scenes. The opening “Alfie's Theme”, lasting more than ten minutes, makes that freedom particularly clear. The film supplied an occasion and a set of starting points; the album created space for a sustained musical conversation around them.

Nelson's ensemble around the tenor saxophone

Rollins is joined by a substantial group of horn players, including Phil Woods on alto saxophone, Bob Ashton on tenor and Danny Bank on baritone. J.J. Johnson and Jimmy Cleveland contribute trombone. Roger Kellaway on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Walter Booker on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums form the rhythm section. Each name brings its own musical background to an ensemble built around a strongly individual soloist.

Nelson's role was to organise these resources. Listen for the points where an arranged horn passage holds a motif in place, then gives Rollins room to develop it. Burrell's guitar also belongs to this balance between written background and flexible accompaniment. The record becomes more than a famous saxophonist addressing a recognisable film title. It demonstrates how an arranger can carry existing material into another kind of performance, finding a relationship between collective statements and individual movement.

A theme returns in another form

The six tracks offer different approaches to their shared origin. “He's Younger Than You Are”, “Street Runner With Child” and “Transition Theme for Minor Blues or Little Malcolm Loves His Dad” preserve connections to the story in their titles. “On Impulse” and “Alfie's Theme Differently” extend the sequence. The recording order supplies an intriguing detail: the alternative treatment of the principal theme was recorded before the performance eventually placed at the beginning of the album.

The familiar Bacharach and Hal David song “Alfie” is absent. This record centres on Rollins' compositions, and the London musicians heard in the film do not appear on these New Jersey studio performances. Those distinctions help establish the album's character. Knowing the film provides context, but it is not required to follow the themes, the exchanges between instruments or the way Nelson reshapes the ensemble from one passage to another. The music has its own internal movement.

This edition: Verve Acoustic Sounds Series

The 180-gram LP AVER 64568 belongs to the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series. The publisher credits Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and identifies the original master tape as the mastering source. Quality Record Pressings manufactures the record. Edition documentation and the label stores identify a gatefold presentation; the record is a stereo LP. The Verve series identity should be retained rather than describing it as an Analogue Productions release.

The original sequence is preserved: the main theme and “He's Younger Than You Are” occupy the first side, with the remaining four pieces on the second. Michael presented this particular edition in his video dated 4 March 2025. His response belongs to the personal experience of the record; the specifications here come from the edition documentation. The publisher does not explicitly describe a fully analogue production chain for this pressing, so the original-master credit should be understood on its own stated terms.
