Buffalo Springfield introduces a band with more songwriting identities than a debut can comfortably hide. Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay bring different approaches to melody, lyric and guitar, yet their voices create a recognisable collective sound. The album stands at a fertile crossing of folk rock, pop concision and the country colours that several members would pursue further.
“Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing” uses a circling melody and shifting harmonic emphasis to give Young’s song an uneasy, inward character, with Furay’s lead vocal carrying its questions lightly. “Flying on the Ground Is Wrong” turns contradiction into a graceful emotional centre, balancing vulnerability with carefully blended voices. On “Burned,” Young’s lead vocal and piano push the song forward with compact urgency. Stills’s “For What It’s Worth” works by leaving space: the guitar harmonic, measured rhythm and watchful vocal create tension without a crowded arrangement. Its warning gathers force because the band never oversells it. Around these well-known points are songs that reveal the group testing who it might become—direct rock numbers, intricate vocal writing and flashes of country inflection. The interest lies not only in hearing future careers begin. It lies in the temporary balance achieved by five musicians whose different instincts could still meet inside one concise record.
This edition spreads Buffalo Springfield across two LPs at 45 RPM. The four-side presentation gives the debut a dedicated collector’s form and preserves its mixture of tightly written songs and contrasting authorial voices. It makes an excellent starting point for exploring the paths later taken by Stills, Young and Furay while remaining compelling as a band album in its own right. Michael 45 stores the records in Germany and ships them from Hilden, removing the need for a personal import from the United States and the customs delay connected with it.
