Everything Must Go as a hybrid stereo SACD from Analogue Productions’ Steely Dan series: Bernie Grundman newly remastered the last studio album with founding member Walter Becker direct to DSD from the original analogue tape. All nine songs play in one sequence – from “The Last Mall” to the title track.
Polished unease, sharper than ever
Everything Must Go finds Steely Dan surveying work, money, technology and collapse with the polished unease of masters returning to familiar ground from a new angle. “The Last Mall” opens like a cheerful announcement at the edge of disaster, its buoyant groove making the lyric’s final shopping trip all the more unsettling – and Donald Fagen’s vocal never tells you exactly where the satire ends.
“Things I Miss the Most” turns loss into a dry inventory, “Godwhacker” brings a harder rhythmic profile and one of the album’s darkest ideas, and Walter Becker sings lead on “Slang of Ages”. The title track closes with a relaxed surface and the sense that institutions, careers and certainty are quietly being cleared away. Keith Carlock’s drumming gives the album its own current – precise enough for the arrangements, loose enough to surprise – while Becker’s guitar and Fagen’s keyboards add shades that grow clearer with every listen.
