Coltrane’s Sound finds John Coltrane’s classic quartet language taking decisive shape. McCoy Tyner’s piano, Steve Davis’s bass and Elvin Jones’s drums surround the tenor and soprano saxophones with harmonic weight and rhythmic freedom. The album joins original compositions to standards, but Coltrane’s focus makes the whole sequence feel like one investigation into how melody can be renewed.

“Central Park West” is among his most concentrated lyrical statements. Coltrane’s soprano saxophone follows the tune’s measured harmonic movement with a calm that never becomes static, while Tyner’s chords add depth without crowding the line. “Equinox” takes the opposite route: a minor blues theme, spare and memorable, creates a dark centre from which the tenor can increase intensity one phrase at a time. In “Satellite,” Coltrane builds a new composition on the harmonic path of “How High the Moon.” The absence of piano leaves saxophone, bass and drums to define the movement directly, and Jones turns pulse into an active partner. “Body and Soul” begins from one of the most familiar ballad melodies in jazz, yet Coltrane’s harmonic substitutions and broad tenor sound open unfamiliar doors inside it. The album’s title is exact. These pieces do not display a single tone or technique; they reveal a complete musical identity through composition, harmony, rhythm and the physical shape of a phrase.

This edition presents Coltrane’s Sound on two LPs at 45 RPM. The four-side format gives its balance of originals and transformed standards a substantial physical setting while preserving the album as a unified quartet statement. It belongs naturally in a collection following Coltrane’s movement from song form toward the searching works ahead. Michael 45 holds the records in Germany and ships them from Hilden, removing the need for a personal import from the United States and the customs wait associated with it.
