Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus revisits several Charles Mingus compositions through fresh large-ensemble designs. That act of return is creative rather than archival. “II B.S.” reworks material from “Haitian Fight Song,” beginning with a bass statement before the band enters in waves of brass, reeds and driving rhythm. Mingus knows exactly how to make a written ensemble passage feel like an argument breaking into the room.
“Better Get Hit in Yo’ Soul” combines gospel call-and-response, hand-clapping energy and abrupt ensemble turns. “Theme for Lester Young” transforms the elegy known as “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” into another orchestral perspective, its melody carried with tenderness but never softened into background music. “Hora Decubitus” takes a sharper, more angular route. Across the album, solo voices rise out of dense textures and disappear again, while Mingus’s bass and compositional identity hold the contrasts together. The result is a self-portrait assembled from living themes. The ensemble includes distinctive voices such as Eric Dolphy and Booker Ervin, musicians able to turn even brief solo space into a sharply etched character.
The Impulse Acoustic Sounds Series presents the album on one 180-gram LP at 33⅓ RPM. The compact single-disc sequence rewards collectors who know earlier versions, yet no prior Mingus listening is required to feel its momentum, humour and dramatic force. It is one of the clearest demonstrations of his ability to make a large jazz ensemble behave like a volatile organism. Michael 45 keeps the record in Germany and dispatches it from Hilden, avoiding a personal US import and its customs wait.

How Michael hears this edition
Listening impression · paraphrased from the video
In a direct comparison, Michael prefers the Acoustic Sounds 33⅓ RPM edition to his earlier AP 45 RPM edition. He finds the sonic gap smaller, however, than on The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, compared in the same video.
