Time Out made unusual metres feel inviting. Released in 1959, the album grew from Dave Brubeck’s fascination with rhythms encountered beyond conventional American popular song, yet its experiments never become classroom demonstrations. Paul Desmond’s alto saxophone, Eugene Wright’s bass and Joe Morello’s drums give Brubeck’s compositions grace, swing and human momentum, allowing the listener to feel the patterns before counting them.
“Blue Rondo à la Turk” organises its main idea in nine beats, grouped as 2-2-2-3, then suddenly opens into a four-beat swing section. The pleasure lies in the transition: a precise rhythmic design becomes a launch point for improvisation. Desmond’s “Take Five” reverses the emphasis. Morello’s five-beat drum pattern establishes an easy circular motion, Wright anchors it, and Desmond’s cool melody makes the unfamiliar pulse seem inevitable. During Morello’s solo, the underlying pattern remains present enough for the quartet to return without breaking the spell.
Analogue Productions presents this edition of Time Out on two 45 RPM LPs. The four-side structure gives each group of pieces its own physical frame and turns the album’s rhythmic designs into a deliberate collector’s programme. It is the expansive option among the two editions listed here, suited to listeners who enjoy giving every side a separate moment of attention. The edition also makes the act of changing sides part of an unusually measured encounter with the quartet. Michael 45 keeps the records in Germany and dispatches from Hilden, allowing customers in Germany and the EU to order without organising a personal US import or waiting for customs clearance.

How Michael hears this edition
Listening impression · paraphrased from the video
Compared with AP’s 33⅓ RPM edition, Michael finds the 45 RPM edition fuller. How obvious the difference is depends on the system, and he explicitly acknowledges the 33⅓ edition’s advantages in price and longer uninterrupted sides.
