Dusty In Memphis as a hybrid stereo SACD from the Atlantic 75 Series, mastered by Kevin Gray direct to DSD from the original master tape. The eleven songs of the original album play in one sequence – from “Just A Little Lovin’” to “I Can’t Make It Alone” – followed by three bonus tracks.
A new musical home
Dusty Springfield’s move to Atlantic brought the collaboration with Jerry Wexler she had wanted. For Dusty In Memphis, the rhythm section of American Sound laid the foundation, with Wexler, Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd producing. Released in 1969, the album sets her voice among musicians whose shared language had grown through countless sessions.
Memphis tells only part of the story: the work began there, while vocals and orchestral elements were developed further in New York. So the album draws on both worlds – not one uninterrupted visit to a single studio, but a journey between two cities.

The weight of a phrase
“Son Of A Preacher Man” is the famous doorway – but “Just A Little Lovin’” and “So Much Love” already reveal the care behind the repertoire. Songs by Goffin and King, Randy Newman, and Bacharach and David sit alongside “The Windmills Of Your Mind”, and Springfield gives all these different writers one common voice.
Listen to how she begins a phrase and where its emphasis finally lands. Expression here never depends on volume alone: a slight delay or the way a note ends can change the whole relationship between singer and band. These are details to come back to again and again once the melodies feel like old friends.

The musicians behind the songs
Reggie Young plays guitar, Tommy Cogbill bass, Bobby Emmons and Bobby Wood keyboards, and Gene Chrisman drums, while the Sweet Inspirations add another vocal dimension. Knowing these roles opens a second listening route through the arrangements.
In “Breakfast In Bed”, follow Springfield first – then listen again for the instrumental answers. “No Easy Way Down” offers another view of the Goffin/King material. The famous single belongs to a carefully considered album sequence with many other ways in.
