Acoustic Live as a hybrid stereo SACD from Analogue Productions: Nils Lofgren live at The Barns at Wolf Trap in January 1997, remastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound. All seventeen songs play in one sequence – from “You” to “No Mercy”, with the audiophile favourite “Keith Don’t Go” in fifth place.
A concert built around the song
On 18 January 1997, Nils Lofgren played The Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia – and that evening became Acoustic Live. The intimate setting turns the spotlight on a musician many listeners know through his work with Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. Here, his own songs and their performance in front of an audience take centre stage.
Seventeen songs make up the programme. Established favourites such as “You”, “No Mercy” and “Keith Don’t Go” meet six songs that were new at the time. A concert also lets familiar material appear in a new order: new neighbours, a different instrumental setting and the audience’s response can shift the perspective on a song without turning it into a different composition.

Beyond “Keith Don’t Go”
“Keith Don’t Go” has built a second life as a demonstration track at hi-fi shows. The song is addressed to Keith Richards – and here you can rediscover its context: a vocal number within a longer evening, fifth in the sequence after “Little On Up” and before “Wonderland”.
“Black Books”, “Believe” and “Man In The Moon” belong to that bigger picture too. The running order invites you to follow Lofgren through song after song rather than just waiting for the next instrumental highlight – voice, words and guitar each have their own part to play.

An attack, a pause, the next line
For a closer listen, follow the relationship between voice and instrument: when does the guitar prepare a vocal entry, fill a pause or take over after a line? The movement between chordal accompaniment and single-note figures is easy to enjoy without any technical vocabulary – as is the way a performance returns to the song after a longer instrumental passage.
The live format gives those transitions a shared time and place: audience and performance belong to the document, this is no collection of separately produced studio tracks. Across seventeen songs the evening takes on a broader shape – and for anyone who has mainly met Lofgren as another artist’s guitarist, it opens a wonderful way into his own repertoire.
The hybrid stereo SACD from Analogue Productions
CAPP 090 SA is a hybrid stereo SACD from Analogue Productions. According to the publisher, the concert was originally recorded digitally at 44.1 kHz and 16-bit, and Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound remastered it – one of the rare digital recordings Analogue Productions reissues because it considers it outstanding. The SACD layer plays on SACD-capable players, the CD layer on any conventional CD player. The disc contains all seventeen songs.
