Four writers, one restless band
Déjà Vu brings four established writers into a group whose unity depends on keeping their differences alive. David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash expand their vocal architecture with Neil Young, while the rhythm section gives acoustic reflection and electric force a common foundation. The album feels communal – without pretending that every song comes from the same temperament.
Crosby’s title track unfolds in irregular phrases and layered voices, its arrangement seeming to discover its route as it moves. “4 + 20” shrinks the scale to Stills and an acoustic guitar, making solitude both subject and method, and Young’s “Country Girl” joins several sections into one continuous emotional landscape. The closing “Everybody I Love You” brings Stills and Young together in a compact electric surge – a burst of group energy after the more private rooms before it.
Elsewhere, “Carry On” turns vocal counterpoint into momentum, “Helpless” finds strength in plain repetition, and “Almost Cut My Hair” lets Crosby’s unease build inside a live-band performance. The famous harmonies matter – but so does the friction. These four don’t dissolve into one smooth personality; they make contrast itself productive.
The Atlantic 75 hybrid stereo SACD
CAPA 020 SA is a hybrid stereo SACD from the Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series. According to the publisher, Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering mastered it direct to DSD from the original master tape; the publisher also recalls the album’s climb to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its release in March 1970. The SACD layer plays on SACD-capable players, the CD layer on any conventional CD player. The disc contains the ten songs of the original album, including the three-part “Country Girl”.
