Buffalo Springfield as a hybrid stereo SACD from the Atlantic 75 Series: the debut of Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay’s band, mastered by Chris Bellman direct to DSD from the original master tape. All twelve tracks play in one sequence – from “For What It’s Worth” to “Pay The Price”.

Three songwriters, one band sound

Buffalo Springfield introduces a band with more songwriting personalities than a debut can easily hold. Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay bring different approaches to melody, lyrics and guitar – yet their voices blend into an unmistakable collective sound, right where folk rock, pop concision and the country colours several members would later pursue meet.

Young’s “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing” circles its melody and shifts its harmonic weight, with Furay’s lead vocal carrying the song’s questions lightly. “Flying On The Ground Is Wrong” turns contradiction into a graceful emotional centre, and on “Burned” Young’s voice and piano drive the song forward with compact urgency. Stills’s “For What It’s Worth” works by leaving space: the guitar harmonic, the measured rhythm and the watchful vocal build tension without a crowded arrangement – and its warning gathers force precisely because the band never oversells it.

Around these landmarks you hear a group testing who it might become: direct rock numbers, intricate vocal writing and flashes of country. The thrill is not only hearing future careers begin – it is the brief balance struck by five musicians whose different instincts could still meet on one concise album.

The Atlantic 75 hybrid stereo SACD

CAPA 023 SA is a hybrid stereo SACD from the Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series. According to the publisher, Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering mastered it direct to DSD from the original master tape. The publisher also recalls that “For What It’s Worth” – written by Stills after he witnessed a riot on the Sunset Strip – climbed into the Billboard Top Ten in March 1967. The SACD layer plays on SACD-capable players, the CD layer on any conventional CD player. The disc contains the twelve tracks of the original album.
