My Generation as a hybrid mono SACD from Analogue Productions: The Who’s 1965 debut in mono, mastered to DSD from the original analogue master tapes. All twelve songs play in one sequence – from “Out In The Street” to the instrumental finale “The Ox”.
Melodies with their elbows out
You remember the defiance – but come back to the album and you notice how much melody it holds. My Generation is not just The Who’s first great outburst; it is the debut of a band whose members already have very different ideas about what a song can do.
Working with producer Shel Talmy in 1965, the group brings its rhythm-and-blues roots together with Pete Townshend’s own songs. Roger Daltrey refuses to make them sound polite, and John Entwistle and Keith Moon have no interest in staying in the background. With so many forces pulling at once, even the shortest songs never stop moving.

Beyond the famous title track
In “My Generation”, the bass gets a moment to speak instead of just supporting. Entwistle’s interventions and Daltrey’s broken phrases make the song far more than a slogan – the band seems to fight for its place in every bar.
Then comes “The Kids Are Alright”, with light melody and voices and no loss of tension, while the instrumental finale “The Ox” stands at the other extreme. The album’s fascination lives between those poles: a sure feeling for pop songwriting right next to the joy of letting things run wild.

Why the mono version matters
The British debut appeared on Brunswick in December 1965, and America received The Who Sings My Generation in 1966. Shel Talmy had also worked with the Kinks, and the album belongs to a London studio culture in which young groups were turning American influences into a more impatient language of their own.
Mono is far more than a nostalgic label here. When stereo mixes were prepared in 2014 for the Super Deluxe Edition, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend re-recorded missing elements, and the band describes its efforts to match the original instruments and microphone types. This SACD presents the album in mono – voice, guitars, bass and drums sharing one focal point, just as the young band first made its statement.
