What the cleaning does

On request we clean your record in our Klaudio ultrasonic machine before it ships and check it by eye. In my experience this pays off with new records too: pressing can leave residues, and a clean groove is kinder to your cartridge.

This means opening the shrink wrap – your record arrives cleaned in your parcel. From €5 per record, depending on the album.

I am aware and agree, that the Record will be put out of the original shrink wrap (this will be included to the delivery).

Calm on the surface

The title Sundown suggests a peaceful end to the day. Gordon Lightfoot turns it into something more unsettled: a song whose easy movement never quite resolves the tension beneath it. That relationship between composure and unease runs through the album. His voice does not need to grow louder to sharpen a situation. A small melodic turn, a carefully placed phrase or an answering guitar line can do the work.

In 1974, Sundown took Lightfoot to the top of the American album chart, while its title song also became a US number-one single. That explains the record’s familiarity, but not its lasting appeal. For that, listen behind the success: an experienced songwriter is working with musicians and a production that give his songs definition without filling every available space.

Toronto, November 1973

The sessions took place at Eastern Sound in Toronto in November 1973, with Lenny Waronker producing and Lee Herschberg engineering. For music that can seem so effortless, this is useful context. The songs are not treated simply as documents of a singer accompanying himself. Instrumental choices, vocal relationships and transitions participate in the storytelling.

Red Shea and Terry Clements bring different guitar contributions to the recording, with Lightfoot’s own acoustic playing remaining the point of reference. The twelve-string on the title track offers a particularly rewarding detail to follow. Its paired strings create a different rhythmic impulse from a single melodic line. Listening separately to the accompaniment and the guitar replies reveals a division of labour beneath the apparently seamless whole.

A roadside sign becomes a song

“Carefree Highway” did not begin as a generic image of an endless road. Its title came from a sign in Arizona that caught Lightfoot’s attention while travelling between Flagstaff and Phoenix. The name remained a note before becoming a song. It is a modest but telling piece of background: an everyday observation is not merely described, but carried into a personal musical setting.

The album places this approachable song alongside “Seven Island Suite”, “The Watchman’s Gone” and “High and Dry”. That range is a reason to resist reducing Sundown to its two major singles. A record can feel thoroughly familiar when we have actually entered through only two of its doors.

Listen to the small movements

The relationship between the voice and its accompaniment is especially rewarding here. Where does Lightfoot hold a phrase back? When does a guitar suggest the next entrance? How much can an arrangement leave out without feeling empty? Those questions take us closer to the music than a broad description such as relaxed folk-rock.

On this double-45 edition, “The Watchman’s Gone” and “Sundown” share side C. That short pairing provides a useful invitation to hear them deliberately in sequence. The famous single returns to the company of an album, rather than standing alone in our memory. Familiarity becomes a starting point for listening, not a reason to stop paying attention.

How Michael hears this edition

Listening impression · paraphrased from the video

Michael praises the clear, intelligible voice and its stable central position. Comparing the AP 45 RPM with an older MoFi edition and a German first pressing, he highlights its immediate presentation and finds it especially involving even at low volume.
