Coltrane is John Coltrane’s first album issued under his sole leadership, recorded in 1957 as his musical identity was becoming impossible to overlook. His work with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk had placed him in demanding company, but this session gives the tenor saxophonist room to define a complete programme. Trumpeter Johnny Splawn and baritone saxophonist Sahib Shihab add contrasting horn colours, while Red Garland, Mal Waldron, Paul Chambers and Albert “Tootie” Heath support different parts of the date.
“Straight Street,” one of Coltrane’s own compositions, uses a minor-key theme whose compressed tension encourages long, searching lines. The tenor does not merely run the changes; repeated shapes and altered accents make the solo feel as if it is testing the structure from several directions. “Violets for Your Furs” reveals the other side of his art. Coltrane states the melody with tenderness and close attention to its contours, refusing to separate technical exploration from song. “Chronic Blues” closes the programme on grounded territory, allowing the horns and rhythm section to exchange robust, clearly profiled statements.
This Analogue Productions Prestige edition presents the mono album on one 180-gram LP. Its single-record form keeps the focus on a concise leader debut in which original writing, standards and blues already point toward Coltrane’s widening ambitions. The fascination lies in hearing a major voice not tentatively beginning, but actively choosing what kind of leader it will become. Michael 45 keeps the record in Germany and ships it from Hilden, so customers in Germany and the EU can order without arranging an individual import from the United States or waiting for customs clearance.
