A journey begins in New York
With The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Genesis released a double album in 1974 whose 23 pieces unfold a continuous but enigmatic narrative. At its center is Rael, who moves from a New York setting into a succession of unreal situations. Peter Gabriel wrote most of the lyrics. The music was made by the five-member lineup with Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford. It became the last Genesis studio album with Gabriel. That later turning point belongs to its history, but it need not turn every scene into a farewell statement.
New York provides the narrative starting point, whereas the music was recorded in Wales. From August to October 1974, the band worked at Glaspant Manor using Island’s mobile studio, before mixing at Island Studios in London. Headley Grange belongs to the writing and rehearsal phase and should not be confused with the actual recording location. Genesis and John Burns produced, with Dave Hutchins engineering. The process joined collective development, mobile recording and subsequent mixing to create an album extending its story across two original LPs.

Five musicians and electronic interventions
Gabriel’s vocals guide the changing perspectives, and he also plays flute. Banks handles keyboards, Hackett guitar, and Rutherford bass and twelve-string guitar. Collins contributes drums, percussion, vibraphone and backing vocals. The instruments do more than accompany lyrics. Shorter pieces and transitions establish the narrative’s own sense of time. Listen for an instrumental passage that suggests a change of location or interrupts an established motion, without assuming that every instrumental color must have one fixed meaning within the story.
Brian Eno receives the original album’s “Enossification” credit for electronic processing of vocals. That contribution belongs to the production history rather than making him a regular member of the group. The lyric writing is also more specifically distributed than a general credit might suggest: Banks and Rutherford wrote the words to “The Light Dies Down On Broadway.” Such details reveal a collective work with different responsibilities. Gabriel’s narrative voice provides continuity, but the musical action depends on the entire band’s contributions and the possibilities of the studio.

Songs and transitions in a continuous sequence
The title track introduces a world in which everyday city images meet surreal transformations. “In The Cage,” “Back In N.Y.C.” and “The Carpet Crawlers” are among the program’s clearly defined songs. Shorter instrumental sections such as “Hairless Heart” and “Ravine” sit alongside them. The relationship between these forms offers a useful way into the album. Each section need not perform the same role as a self-contained song. Some sustain a longer musical thought, while others alter the scale or prepare the next event.
Rael’s relationship with his brother John, his encounters and his shifting identity allow several readings. Fully decoding the story is not a prerequisite for following the musical drama. Start with the order: which ideas return, where is a thought interrupted, and where does space emerge after a dense passage? The 23 titles are divided into eleven on the first disc and twelve on the second. This edition uses the original mix. The later Nick Davis remix and other anniversary releases represent different versions whose production details should not be transferred to this SACD set.
Two hybrid SACDs in stereo
Analogue Productions releases The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in the Atlantic 75 Series as two hybrid SACDs. Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering is credited with mastering. The publisher describes a transfer from the original master tapes to DSD. That identifies the stated source and process for this edition. The studio’s name should not be confused with the engineer’s: Chris Bellman is the credited individual, rather than Bernie Grundman personally. The product number is CAPA 013 SA.
Each disc includes a CD layer for ordinary CD players and an SACD layer for compatible equipment. The program is stereo; this edition does not contain a 5.1 mix. Format and version are therefore clearly defined: the complete original album on two hybrid SACDs, using the original mix. Listeners familiar with several editions have a specific reference point for comparison. New listeners can approach the story through its full sequence, from the opening New York scene through the instrumental spaces to the end of the journey.
